Diaphragmatic hernia » Thorax Q79.0


A congenital malformation characterized by herniation into the thorax of abdominal contents through a defect of the diaphragm. Includes total absence of the diaphragm. Excludes hiatus hernia, eventration and phrenic palsy.


Excludes hernia of the hiatus [Q40.1], eventration and phrenic nerve palsy [Q79.1]. The most frequent type (85%) is left dorso-lateral (foramen of Bochdalek), and 15% is ventral, through the foramen of Morgagni.
